Abstract

Subtitution fuel type or changing fuel specification of gasoline engine will alter setting parameters engine as well as modify it in order to minimize degradation of engine performance and increase of exhaust gas emission. Utilization of ethanol (85% by vol.)-gasoline (15% vol.) blend (E-85) for gasoline engine requires some engine modifications and setting parameters due to discrepancies of properties and characterics between ethanol and gasoline. The aims of this research are to test and analyse fuel propereties of ethanol, premium and E-85 and to investigate the effect of ignition timing and compression ratio on engine performance as well as exhaust gas emission. Ignition timing vary between 15? an 35? Before Top Dead Centre (BTDC) with 3? crank angles (CA) increaments. Whereas variation of compression ratio consists of 9 (standart); 9,4; 9,85 and 10,2: 1. It is found that advancing ignition timing into 30? BDTC more effective to improve engine performance and reduce CO and HC emission compared to increasing compression ratio into 10,2:1.

Keywords : E-85, engine performance , ignition timing dan compression ratio.
