National energy demands will rise but availability of energy resources decrease, so that it need to be done the action to prevent energy crisis including the development of energy based on biomass. Abundant biomass resources are available in Indonesia based on agricultural product. Several agricultural residue such as rice husk, rice straw, coconut shell, bagasse and cocoa shell are potential renewable energy resources. The objective of this research is to study the effect of preheat air temperature on combustion characteristic of biomass briquette from cocoa shell. Biomass materials were crushed until particle size of less than 1 mm were obtained. Five grams mixture of biomass and binder with composition of 70%:30% were briquetted in 16 mm cylindrical mould and dried in an oven at 50?C for 5 hours. Combustion tests were conducted in a combustion chamber at constant air velocity 0,3 m/s and constant wall temperature 350?C. The results show that the increase of preheat air temperature will increase combustion rate dan gas temperature. This is affected by reaction kinetic that dominate the combustion at low temperature. The increase of preheat air temperature will decrease CO emission.
